Dallas and Fort Worth, February 27, 2003: Fleming Cos. Inc., with headquarters in Dallas, announced Tuesday, February 25, that it would cut 1,800 jobs across its current 24 distribution centers in the United States. The layoffs constitute 15 percent of its work force. Fleming Cos. Inc. will close four distribution centers in an effort to return to profitability. These actions are taken as a result of the recent loss of its largest customer, Kmart Corporation. Fleming is the number one supplier of consumer package goods to retailers in the United States, and serves 50,000 retail locations.

Fleming’s layoffs will affect many people who live in the Dallas and Fort Worth area. Many Texans may find themselves unemployed, and without any source of income. As a result, many may be tempted to avoid paying bills or rack up credit card charges.
